I live in a zero-lot line duplex with a small backyard. Yes, it may be the size of a postage stamp, but it’s mine! This year, the gardening crazy finally hit me, and I decided to spiff the space up. It’s protected by a tall cedar fence, similar to the fence featured on the TV show “Home Improvement.” It creates a feeling of privacy, but the yard itself had no pizzazz. I gleaned ideas from looking through magazines and going online to surf the Internet. I probably spent 10 hours studying other’s people’s small back yard spaces, but I enjoyed every moment. One of the things I found that was a must use was a garden trellis.
I selected a corner of the lot near the fence and installed a serene garden fountain, a cedar mediation bench and a wildflower garden. But to really introduce the space and set it apart, I added a vinyl arbor. It was constructed of maintenance-free vinyl and features rectangular lattice on both sides. I planted morning glories on either side of the arbor. Their beautiful vines and bluish-purple flowers seem to love climbing up the lattice work. I highly recommend a vinyl arbor because they are very easy to assemble and they never fade or need paint. I prefer meditation over maintenance!
