A student can certainly get by without wireless internet, but does it provide enough benefits to students to be really worth the cost? First of all, think about a student who has access to the internet during class. On one hand, this means that they can instantly upload their notes from the class, can keep track of their homework assignments and can get information on the lessons. However, it may also mean that they’re distracted. Will that student use their wireless connection to stay up to date on class or will they use it to check their favorite social networking sites?
In some cases it may be best to allow students to have network access only when they’re in their dorm rooms. This allows them to get their studying done and allows them to spend their free time as they like, but it can also help them concentrate more on class during a lecture. However, in some cases this may not be best. Some students can handle the responsibility of paying attention and some students really do use the extra help to further their classwork. The key is to assess each student and decide what’s going to make the most sense for them.
