When I think about a finial I always think of curtain rods. So when my husband came in one day and told me he wanted to put a couple of finials on the fence posts on either side of our driveway, I thought he was nuts! Why would anyone place a curtain rod finial on a fence post? Then he showed me the finials he was looking at and I had to laugh as he went through the pictures of finials that sit atop the post caps on the fenceposts. One of the rarer bonsai trees is the Chinese Lacebark Elm. This tree is similar to the Chinese Elm bonsai, yet it has a slightly different look to it. It’s a very tough bonsai that is capable of surviving just about everything—sure, it may drop all of its leaves after a move and seem like it’s going to slowly die off, but it almost always grows back after a short amount of time. The Lacebark Elm can be either an indoor or outdoor bonsai, so it’s a great fit in any bonsai garden. Before this year I have always used either wood or vinyl trellises and decided that I would go ahead and try a metal trellis and see how they do in my yard. I must say that I will never use anything else! The durability and stability of the iron has been great since we have had an unusual year of storms and rain, which bring the winds with them. While I have had to tie down or hunt down the other trellises, the metal ones have stayed where they are supposed to be! At the end of the season all the non-metal trellises will be going away.
