When I think about a finial I always think of curtain rods. So when my husband came in one day and told me he wanted to put a couple of finials on the fence posts on either side of our driveway, I thought he was nuts! Why would anyone place a curtain rod finial on a fence post? Then he showed me the finials he was looking at and I had to laugh as he went through the pictures of finials that sit atop the post caps on the fenceposts.
